Theo joined the NSCG in 2007. He started working in wood in 1987, learning how to make furniture at evening adult education classes at the local high school. This led to an interested in woodturning and after a year or two and some craft courses in turning, he completed the Woodturning Trade Certificate.
While still woodturning, he became interested in woodcarving and started making craft items such as pate knives, letter openers, and he taught himself chip carving patterns into wood. Later, Theo completed a decorative woodcarving course for two years.
From craftwork his interested turned to sculpture and he has now been studying with Tom Bass for the past 16 years at his studio in Broadway, and later in Erskineville.
Currently Theo is exploring refined abstract forms and studying the human body as a subject for sculpture. Alongside his sculpture he has always maintained his whittling skills making such things as spoons, knives, wooden tools, small birds, animals and abstract shapes.
Theo loves wood as a medium for his creative expression. He loves the colours, patterns, the grain and the fact that each different wood has its own personal qualities which must be considered while working with it. |
