Joan joined the NSCG in 2007. After leaving school at 14, Joan received an art scholarship to East Sydney Technical College (the National Art School) to study commercial art. Joan then was employed for L.B. Hamilton Studios specialising in artwork for catalogue and newspaper advertising. Joan worked until married, but continued to take classes in life drawing and joined many workshops, art groups and art societies, continually painting and working as a teacher in watercolour, sketching and Chinese brush painting at Ku-Ring-Gai Art Centre. Joan has won many awards for watercolour and drawing; including awards from Hunters Hill Combined Art Society and the Ku-Ring-Gai Art Society.
A painting was purchased as a gift from Ku-Ring-Gai Council to the city of Sydney as their collection to celebrate the Sesquicentenary of Sydney 1992. Her miniature accepted for a competition in Nagano, Japan in association with the Winter Olympics. Joan was accepted as a student to take part in a 3 week residency in Italy in conjunction with Georgetown University, Washington DC and later, a 6 week resident programme also in Italy with the International School of Art.

Recent work in miniatures and miniature books is an ongoing obsession of Joan, and an extension of her work in watercolour and acrylics.
